On the chilly morning of December, I woke up in the hotel of Machhapuchhre base camp to get a glimpse of Sun rays touching the top of Mt. Hiuchuli. It was an awesome view, an awesome experience.

Machhapuchhre, also known as Fish-Tail mountain is 6,993 metres (22,943 ft) and is unaccented mountain of Nepal. One of the primary attractions of the Pokhara region, its majestic view lures the tourists to this destination, specially when the snow-capped mountain is reflected on the Fewa lake.

I took the shot from a slightly different zone - on my way back from Syangja - which lies towards the west from Pokhara and the two tails of the FishTail are visible. The tails are not visible from Pokhara. On the first Dashain following my wedding, I was in a visit to my in-laws (its our tradition) and it was a nice experience - riding a bike - enjoying my wife's company - amidst the beautiful landscape - bright mountains - on a early morning sun - which I missed since long long ago.

Took the shot when I was on the way to my engagement, approximately 245kms far from Kathmandu. The sun has just risen and we were out for freshening up (after a whole night long drive), while I took the cam and wandered around to the stream.
Opened up the photo bucket, found a snap, did a little PS and this came out.
The water was so clean - transparent - that it barely feels like the pebbles are under water.

We had one good hike around the Shivapuri hill and finally got to the top. It was an amazing walk - all the way through the lush green vegetation - and mingling with the light and shade as we move uphill and down.

I took this shot at Bagdwar. Bagdwar is known to be the origin of Bagmati - the holy river flowing through the sacred shrine PashupatiNath. Apart from cleansing the bad deeds, Bagmati is also a major contributor in the valley's sewage system - converting herself from a clean river (as seen in the photo) to a sewage (Sad to say - but true).

The SriLankan government announcement of victory over the liberation rebels has marked an entry in history as the end of 25years old civil war.

The Tigers had been fighting for a separate state for Tamils in the north and east of Sri Lanka since the 1970s.

About 80,000 people have been killed in the conflict and thousands displaced.

As Sunari Silva from Colombo comments on bbc,

"The war on terror is over & as a Srilankan who grew up & lived with this war I am happy to see this day! There is a long road ahead & we will all have to work hard to heal the wounds, learn to trust & share with each other. At this point though I am curious to see if the LTTE sympathisizing Tamil diaspora who for 26 years funded a war so that their brethren in the island would fight & die for their "cause", would now be willing to donate generously to help the same Tamils rebuild their lives."

With the end of the war, lets hope peace prevails in this country and the government will address the minorities with equal rights.

Rara : the dreamland

Last week, I had a dream-come-true journey to the Rara (pronounced RahRah locally) lake situated in Mugu, hilly area of far western Nepal.
Without doubt, the journey was adventurous & composed of several facets of Nepali life. Within a short span of time (10days) I witnessed a series of contrasting moments, events & emotions...
but with the grace of Rara, she lets you forget all the worldliness and engulfs yourself in the nature - pure nature.

I dedicate this snap to my beloved for the wonderful company, and the dreamy honeymoon one could ever imagine. Cheers to you, cheers to my love.

Food for Life

Dabal Bahadur Malla is one of the 14-15 Mugalis who have travelled the distance of 5 days to reach Talcha in Rara VDC from their village Dhaina VDC to fetch rice to feed their family. As a part of the "Food for Work" program run by WFP, they contribute their labor (one person from a family) in road construction in the Mugu-Jumla section, where they get 4 kgs of rice for one day's work. Almost all the VDC is turning up to receive the rice, with a long caravan of goats and mules; some combining as much as 1200 goats. On their trip to Mugu, they bring millet, bean seeds, buckwheat to sell them on the way.

Nepal is an agricultural country and here, in Mugu, people are producing(virtually) by contributing nation in infrastructure development and it will still take ( people make such speculations) next 15-20 yrs to regulate that road properly.

They have 120 goats with them which are used to carry the small packages of rice (seen in the background).

I visited their camp in the evening to share some medicine as I heard some of the elderly members are sick. They offered us their roti… and it was delicious.

Mugu is approximately at 571kms air distance from Kathmandu. This district is still inaccessible by road network; the closest station to be reached by road is Khalanga of Jumla, which is still 817kms from the capital city, and it takes approximately 3 days walk to Rara from Jumla. Mugu is one of the districts severely affected by food scarcity and hence the livelyhood is very difficult in this region. Mugu can be reached via plane/helicopter from Nepalgunj or Surkhet.

A journey into the Mugu region and the beautiful Rara Lake, is probably one of the most rewarding and fascinating treks in all the Himalayan range given its tranquility and the un-spoilt splendor of nature. Rara, situated at an altitude of 2,990 m, is the biggest lake in Nepal. This sparkling lake with brilliantly clear water is surrounded by a spruce and juniper forest and lies within the Rara National Park. The easiest means to reach Rara is to take a flight from Nepalgunj to Mugu (Talcha) and take a 4 hrs walk to Rara lake, or take a flight to Jumla, from where your destination is 2-3 days walk away. Start this refreshing trek in the hilly village of Mugu where Rhododendron orchards stretch out over the hills. You then enter the Rara National Park, which is the smallest national park in Nepal. Surrounded by blue pine, black juniper, West Himalayan spruce, oak and Himalayan cypress, Rara Lake is also a popular pilgrimage site for Nepalis. This spectacular scenery and its serenity will bring inner peace to any visitor.

Since few tourists and natives visit the Rara Lake, there are no elaborate tourist facilities either along the trekking route or inside the park except a hotel just beside the shore of the Lake. Camping is also a good option if trekkers are self-sufficient in all their needs.

Update: Besides being the largest lake, Rara is recently found to be the deepest lake of Nepal with 167meters depth (as opposed to the popular belief of being 650 meters, Shey Phoksundo lake was measured to be only 145meters deep)

It was the first day of 2009.

This year started with a lot of surprises... i would rather say changes than surprises. I had a glass of wine when the first moments of new year rolled in. And i stayed in open air, besides a fire, listening some soft music and then gazing the stars up in the sky.

Following hours, was normal, washed few heavy clothes and then read a book, reclined, slept for few hours, and then visited Bhaktapur Durbar Square in the evening.

Living with the joy and the sadness; beauty and the not-beautiful - at the same time, within adjacent moments, it was a remarkable day, as it gave an insightful experience.

Trek to Gosaikunda

Ahh... I'm back, and back with a bang. The trek was marvelous - simply mind blowing. We enjoyed a lot. The walk, the hill, the river and the forest. The vegetation - the calmness. The breathlessness - and the fight (with ourselves). The exhaustion and the tiring walk... it was a test of endurance, i should say (for me, a kind of fight with myself)... but on the whole journey I never thought that I shouldn't have come. It was a one of a kind experience. So pure & free from the noise and so close with nature.

The sky - so blue - i've never seen such a clear sky from here.

All in all - it was lovely. Every moment enjoyable and satisfying.

And take my advice, you should go there too, at least once.

This is an adaptation of the photo blog I posted in EverestUncensored.org. It took almost 2 weeks to get back here... to compose and to post the photo-report, and two more days to come to my own home.

I thought of writing few words for each of these... but then, just remembered - a picture explains a thousand words... so here we go... all in the form of pictures : No words at all.

This is the place to be, the place with the most most most loveliest view i have ever seen.
We spent almost 30-45 mins here while walking up to the Kunda...

The view you see is extra ordinary. You see the sun setting into the horizon. And you see several layers of hills playing hide-and-seek with the clouds ... breathtaking.

i know you weren't intending bad... but the point is : we do not doubt whom we love. the thing that keeps us running is that small thread of trust and faith. we put everything to nurture it - as i believe it is the only thing which should be kept out of doubt.

... and it is the basis of everything ... everything that matters.

& as for me, i want to put my everything on the faith - yes everything.

to some extent you are right - the precautionary thing - & the possibility of something unexpected happening in the future... well, tell me where is certainty - certainty at a level that you can predict all the future outcomes... its just a matter of extent of uncertainty - next moment is uncertain, next day is uncertain, everything else is uncertain, ... we cannot keep doubting everything.

this view reminds me of my childhood. Specially the days around Dashain in autumn. The Annapurna range used to be clearly visible... starting early morning the panoramic view would unveil from the curtain of the mist. I felt like reaching the top while I rocked on the swing.

and, all of a sudden, after these many years (its been around 4-5 years), i feel like running towards my village, running to get there right now...

and... collect the village pals to get babiyo from Seti river cliff... get the Saal or Bamboo stem, the Linge Ping, the treat at the evening, the full night hangouts in the open air, jungle walk to the neighbouring villages under the full moon...

and all that i miss.

... i finished 'Unaccustomed Earth' by Jhumpa Lahiri today around 2am. it was good, initially i found it very interesting but later i felt the monotonous unaccustomed-ness in it now and again. i liked Lahiri's style of weaving mundane issues in an interesting way.

...but it doesn't always gives me a pint of joy as i finish reading... as i'm burdened with loads of work these days. a desire to retreat sometimes fills me with a sense of guilt. thats bad. work hasn't been just work - its been almost everything that i do all day. i dont like this.

...

i've to finish a project - its been lingering since 3 months - and its still not done - & that sucks too.

i'm trying to get over it soon, soon = a day or two and then it will feel good to breath easily... (unless anything new comes up - which always does)

The stage was set, in the midst of the pokhari, at first I thought, some kind of rock concert was going on, but later it turned out to be a fusion music program.... on the short stay of around 10 minutes, it was amazing.

finally back to Nepal, and back to Home...

no matter how troublesome¹ life might be here... its always been a place of dreams... & i've always been longing to get back... i really missed the cool weather above all.

1. Experiencing the long line for petrol. I'm getting it in 200Rs/ltr. Its too bad to do, I know, but what to do? Either way, its gonna cost much of my time and effort to travel by alternate means. Ohh you can't imagine of getting into the Nepal Yatayat these days.
And, why are we having load-sheddings in this rainy season? I thought the reason for this was the lack of water in the reservoir dams.... but Trishuli (and all rivers) are flooded, Ktm is all flooded, and hopefully dams are also full by now... but whats happening...

After watching this movie , The Happenning, only thing I could say was "It should not be happening - this movie is not happening...".

Budhha statue at ShantiBan
Shantiban was established in 2059B.S as a guest house. Later the idea was dropped and a Buddha shrine was established. Since then, several events have been organized including a Shantiban-Lumbini movement. Adding up to that, since last two years a vocational education on Buddha have been given to the local kids every Saturday.

The GuruMa, I forgot to ask her name, comes every Saturday to teach the kids about Buddha and his teachings.

She was happy to get the trophy - a biscuit at the end of the class. We even got one. :)

It was a busy day and there were lots of work pending to be done at home; yes of course 'with deadlines'. And all of a sudden I had to start with a paper rose project for my sister Aaraju.
I hadn't done this before, so there came an obvious oracle - Google! I tried for few hours searching way to make it, tried with some. They didn't work out.

Finally I tried it myself, with a natural algorithm. [Means: trying to make it remembering how it looks like]
It didn't come up as a rose, but it looked like a flower. A friend of mine said it looked like an exotic orchid.
I hadn't had a chance to work on water colors since quite long and it was a chance. Used a long forgotten toothbrush to spray the colors.
It was refreshing - indeed.
She woke up till 12.30 midnight, and it was worthwhile.

I remembered when once my friend said - "When you don't have a manual, you have to use your brain".

watched this movie last night.
not as adventurous/action-packed as I had expected, but the concept was interesting; & specially the context of the movie: only one man alive in the entire city! no matter how traumatic the situation might be. The uprooted city & its deserted livelihood.

...and now, when I think of it from a slight different angle, I can imagine (may be I can't imagine this) how terrible it would be to be all alone: not for a day, not for a week, but for 1000 days,or even more... OHH!
this evening, in the office, we were discussing on someone's endurance on staying alone, how far can you go this race : staying alone. just think, how far can you go with this!

five point someone, the alchemist

just finished this novel - Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat. Took me few days with few hours a day, its a fun read; I liked it. The title seems odd, but it becomes meaningful with the introduction of the context.
His second novel - "one night at the call center" was also fun.

& Thanks to this load-shedding, it gives me time to read. Sometimes I wish the electricity never came, for couple of hours more, but cant be that way... :)

I read The Alchemist before this. Had heard of this long ago, but never had a chance.
Its a hyped one, I think, as I didn't find it as impressive as I had expected. A simple story of a guy following his dreams. Not bad though.

And this time, thanks to the warm sun, specially in the Saturdays & Sundays, when its irresistible to stay inside. (Obviously I miss lots of work while I stay in the Sun; & this is one of the reasons for my dangling deadlines) But still, its fine.

I felt glad for the choice I made: a short trip on bike, rather than a movie show. The return trip was even better, a rough route to Sallaghari through Duwakot. I had been there few years back. Then, we had taken the route, down from Changu through pine trees and the village... towards Duwakot.
This time we were on a bike, ... I loved the smooth ride, clean road (at least without the smoky vehicles), full of life all around, no dust & smoke and of course the closeness with nature.

I still don't like that crowd, drunk crowd (almost 90%).
Personally, I take this just as a technical new year!

I didnt like the Thai rice noodles, I don't remember what it was called. And I also didn't like you either B**, you should be able to express things in more proper way, and when you are not drunk.

I had to sneak out before the countdown began, I should think of a better plans next time.

ok, coming back to home, its Teej today, festival for ladies. The justification of the motive behind the celebration has always been questioned, however it still succeeds to maintain its own charm in the female mind, as I see.
It used to be good fun and the sense of festivity spread all around when all the sisters gathered in our home, and the neighboring ladies as well gathered to have a sing-dance program.
We were kids and we just enjoyed the presence of the guests in our home.
it was a long time ago, a really long time. Now its difficult, even to imagine, the gathering of all, in one place now. Besides, the "agenda" of celebration itself has changed.
Time change, people change, society changes... its the way.
